Not to mention the ability to store the files in source control, and be able to have multiple users work on it and rely on the tools to handle the merging of changes automagically.

Hopefuly editing the document doesn't taint the whole file, and only pieces, so things like cvs and subversion will play nice with word (FINALLY!)

How can you talk about xml? It's zip all over the place.
